Kick Anti-Racism out of football by Jay Knott (21dec11) ⇌ (Irony)
Liverpool's Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez has just been banned for eight matches for a bit of banter with Manchester United's French-African defender Patrice Evra. The thought police who run the Football Association were deaf to the explanation that 'negrito' is not an insult in Spanish.
There is no place for racism in football. But there is no place for anti-racism either - the defect which makes Europeans, the least racist people who have ever lived, feel guilty about something they don't practice. There is no place for politics at all, and what footballers say to each other on the pitch should not be discussed off it.
I've admired Suarez since he used handball in the World Cup to deny Ghana a goal. I predicted Ghana would miss the resulting penalty, which they did, so, though Suarez was sent off, Uruguay won. That's football. Moralizing about it is pointless - Suarez did the right thing according to the rules. If you don't like it, change the rules.
